Why Add Battery Storage to Your Solar System?

Maximising your Investment

Solar panels generate clean electricity during the day, often when your household demand is at its lowest. Without a battery, much of this surplus is exported back to the grid for only a modest return. With a home battery, you capture and store that energy so it is ready when you need it most: in the evening, overnight, or during peak tariff times. It means less reliance on the grid, more control over your usage and greater returns from your solar investment.

How Home Battery Storage Works

A simple but powerful process
  • Daytime generation: Solar panels produce electricity, powering your home first.
  • Surplus storage: Any excess energy is channelled into your battery.
  • Evening use: The stored energy is released to power your home once the sun sets.
  • Optional top-up: Some systems allow you to charge from the grid at off-peak rates, making them versatile even in winter.

This simply cycle means your home, or business, can run largely on clean, self-generated solar power, with the grid acting only as a backup.

Solar Panels

Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic cells, or PV cells. These collect energy emitted from the sun to create DC electricity (direct current).

Inverter

The DC electricity collected by the solar panel is then sent through an Inverter which converts it into AC electricity, which is used to power your home.

Battery Storage

Excess AC electricity generated is stored in a battery, allowing you to use solar energy 24/7. This minimises reliance on the grid and ensures continuous savings.

The Benefits of adding Battery Storage

Adding a battery to your solar system transforms how you use energy. Instead of only relying on the grid, you make the most of your own generation and gain greater control over your household power.

Lower Your Energy Bills

By storing surplus electricity during the day, you can use it in the evenings when tariffs are at their highest. This reduces your dependence on peak-rate grid power and cuts monthly costs.

Greater Energy Independence

A battery allows you to control when and how you use your energy. Rather than being tied to grid availability, you decide how to power your home, giving you more freedom and flexibility.

Backup Power During Outages

Many modern batteries include backup functionality, keeping essential circuits such as lighting, refrigeration and communications running during a power cut. This adds extra security and peace of mind.

Maximise Solar Self-Consumption

Without a battery, much of your solar surplus is exported back to the grid at a low rate. Storing it means you keep more of your own power and reduce reliance on fossil-fuelled electricity.

Stronger Return on Investment

Independent research from Loop (2025) shows that combining solar with battery storage can achieve payback in as little as seven years. This makes batteries not just practical but financially smart.

24/7, 365, Green, Clean Power

With a battery, your solar panels don’t just work in the daytime. They continue to power your home after the sun goes down, turning your property into a modern, round-the-clock energy system.

Is Battery Storage Worth It in the UK?

How much can a battery add to your bill savings?

The Energy Saving Trust reports that adding a battery allows you to use up to 80% of your own solar generation, compared with only 40–50% without one. That means less wasted energy, higher savings and more stability against rising grid costs.

To put that into perspective, a typical 4kWp solar system generates around 3,500–4,000 kWh a year. Without a battery, you might only use half of that, with the rest exported back to the grid at a low rate. With a battery, you could keep and use most of that energy yourself, potentially saving £400–£600 more each year on bills compared to solar alone, depending on your household consumption and tariff.

With zero VAT on battery installations (still true as of August 2025, UK Gov), the financial case has never been stronger.

The Bigger Picture

How Our Systems Work Together

Renewables work best when designed as a complete system. By linking solar panels, a battery and an EV charger, your home becomes its own mini power station.

  • Solar panels generate electricity during the day
  • Battery storage saves any surplus for later use
  • EV charger draws on stored or live solar power
  • The grid provides a reliable backup when needed
  • Sell surplus energy back to the grid via SEG Scheme

This joined-up approach maximises savings, cuts reliance on the grid and ensures your home is ready for the future of energy.

Helping you make the most of your solar and battery system investment

A home battery delivers even greater benefits when integrated with solar panels and an EV charger. Panels provide the renewable electricity, your battery stores it for later use, and an EV charger puts it straight into your car. Together, these technologies maximise your savings and make your home far less dependent on the grid.

Every household that installs battery storage alongside solar panels makes a direct contribution to reducing the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels. By storing and using more of your own renewable electricity, you cut down the amount of grid power you need, much of which is still generated from gas and coal.

Maximising solar self-consumption can prevent hundreds of kilograms of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere each year. Combined with panels, a well-sized battery system can help a household cut over a tonne of emissions annually, the same as planting more than 40 trees.
